Just like a stage trick, our attention is pulled in one direction while the real action happens where we aren’t looking. Governments, much like master illusionists, understand human psychology. They know how to shape the narrative so that the crowd applauds—even when what’s happening behind the smoke and mirrors might not be in our best interest.
